Many of us have landed a job thanks to a referral. But when it’s our turn to refer someone else, we often hesitate.
I’ve thought a lot about why that is, especially while building ePosting Corp, where the whole idea is to make referrals easier and more rewarding. Here’s what I’ve learned:
- Fear of being wrong.
Referrals feel like a risk to your reputation. Even when you trust someone, it feels personal if it doesn’t work out.
- It feels like too much work.
Many assume referrals require resume deep-dives, glowing endorsements, even interview prep. That pressure turns a simple favor into something we avoid.
- Anxiety about outcomes.
What if the person doesn't get the job? Or worse, what if they do and it doesn’t go well? That uncertainty makes us second-guess helping at all.
- Often, we limit referrals to people we know well.
“I don’t refer strangers” is very common. It’s understandable, but it keeps doors closed for qualified people outside our immediate circles. We all know how hard it is these days to get the resume seen by a human through cold application. Think of a talented new grad trying to break in. Without connections, they’re locked out.
- We forget to pay it forward.
Most of us got a break because someone took a chance on us – put in a good word, made an intro, or simply forward our resume. But once we’re on the other side, it’s easy to forget how hard the search was. That distance makes us slower to help.
Here’s the mindset shift I believe we need:
A referral is not a guarantee, and it’s certainly not a hiring decision. That’s up to recruiters and hiring managers. A referral is simply a nudge, a way to say “This person might be worth a closer look.”
If you don’t know the person well, you can still add value by referring based on what you do know, especially in your domain. You’re not vouching for every detail. You’re highlighting what you can confidently speak to, and creating a chance for someone to be seen.
Every thoughtful referral you make builds your reputation as someone who helps others rise. At www.eposting.com, we’ve made it easier to do that, with less risk and more rewarding.
